Open Forum

-       MASU update on recent events involving a professor’s personal blog – Councillor Tobin

Discussion

-       Councillor Tobin: In light of the controversy that has been spreading on social media regarding one of our professors, I would like to put the spotlight on the MASU exec and ask how they are planning to handle systemic racism toward black and indigenous students at MtA. I am asking this in context to a plan that was written up and sent out on June 12th after discussions with the BSU.

o   Councillor Ferguson: We are continuing to support a variety of different groups throughout the year in different ways and we intend to go back and check this plan to make sure it doesn’t get forgotten. This is an ongoing plan, it isn’t just for the year.

o   Councillor Minocha-McKenney: Can I have a brief synopsis of what this plan is about for context?

o   Councillor Ferguson: This is a plan that was developed following discussions with the BSU in June. It was ways we could be better allies as an organization.

o   Councillor Tobin: Can you point to items in this plan that the MASU executive have pursued or achieved since this plan was devised in June?

o   Councillor Ferguson: I don’t have the plan in front of me at the moment but if you’d like to set this as an agenda item for next meeting, I’d be happy to discuss it.
